Bridging Circular Value Chains for Permanent Magnets: Key takeaways from SICAPERMA’s intense week in Brussels and beyond

The SICAPERMA project recently concluded an intense and highly productive series of activities in Brussels, filled with high-impact events focused on building resilient, circular, and strategically autonomous European value chains for rare earths and permanent magnets. From our internal consortium alignment to an open interregional networking event and high-level summits, these activities shifted the lens toward addressing Europe’s permanent magnet crisis and highlighting the importance of strong interregional collaboration.

Focus on consortium alignment: 3rd Consortium Meeting at EISMEA

The first of these activities took place on 18 May in Brussels, with our 3rd in-person Consortium Meeting hosted at the European Innovation Council and SMEs Executive Agency (EISMEA). This gathering brought together all 14 project partners to align our strategic efforts, share our milestones, and to dive deep into our technical progress across the project’s main areas of work. The meeting was officially opened with speeches by Maja Ferlinc, Project Advisor at EISMEA, and the SICAPERMA project coordinator, Sebastián García Galán from University of Jaén.

During the meeting, partners focused on SICAPERMA’s three core demonstration pathways: the multi-stream dismantling and processing of permanent magnets, the production of sintered and bonded magnets from recycled materials, and the integration of these recycled magnets into strategic applications like motors and sensors. The consortium also addressed value chain structuring, aiming to replicate circular capabilities in less developed regions and among SMEs.

In the afternoon, the consortium split into dedicated working groups to maximise productivity. One group focused on connecting the technical pilots and coordinating activities, while the other dedicated its efforts to ecosystem management, value chain structuring, and outreach, ensuring that our circular capabilities can be effectively replicated in less developed regions and among SMEs.

Interactive sessions and policy context: Bridging Circular Value Chains for Permanent Magnets

On May 19, we opened the discussion beyond the consortium by hosting the hybrid event “Bridging Circular Value Chains for Permanent Magnets” at the University Foundation in Brussels. Co-organised in collaboration with the Slovenian Business & Research Association (SBRA), TECOS, N-ABLE and OnProjects, this event brought together European policymakers, industry leaders, researchers, and EU-funded projects to address the conditions needed to scale circular value chains.

European context and interactive discussions

The morning session provided a strategic overview of the European Critical Raw Materials landscape, policy developments, and industrial challenges. It began with keynote presentations from Kristiina Jokelainen (SmartNorth Ltd), Nabeel Mancheri (EIT Raw Materials), and Milan Grohol (European Commission – DG GROW), representing the European Commission.

Following this, attendees enjoyed a showcase of synergies among EU-funded projects, with presentations from SICAPERMA (I3), PERMANET (Horizon Europe), IN-MOB (I3), EVEN CLOSER (I3), and CSCC (Climate KIC).

The morning concluded with an engaging panel discussion moderated by Pierre Padilla and André Carvalho (N-ABLE), where experts debated the critical challenges and opportunities in developing scalable circular value chains for permanent magnets.

Capacity-building and industrial uptake

In the afternoon, the focus shifted to technical execution with a capacity-building workshop on the dismantling and pre-processing of magnet-containing products, representing the critical first stage of the SICAPERMA project. Cristian Aionesei from Greentronics and Sophie Rivoirard from Magreesource led a capacity-building workshop on the dismantling and pre-processing of magnet-containing products, which represents the essential first technical stage of closing the loop for rare earth magnets in the SICAPERMA project

The day concluded with a joint focus group in collaboration with the PERMANET project, dedicated to innovative magnet production and the conditions required for stronger European industrial uptake in sectors like automotive, wind energy, and electronics. Emeline Saracco (Magreesource) introduced the session, which was followed by presentations on innovative permanent magnet production from Kaouther Zaara (IMA) and Ana Drmota Petrič (Kolektor). Finally, a round table moderated by Alen Draganović brought together representatives from the value chain — including Irena Janotová (FU SAV) and Ahmed Talaat  (IMA) — to discuss the role of permanent magnets in industrial equipment and the precise conditions needed to strengthen European industrial uptake.

Connecting with the EIT RawMaterials Summit 2026

Following our dedicated events, SICAPERMA actively participated in the EIT RawMaterials Summit 2026, held on May 20 and 21 at The EGG in Brussels. We had the privilege of hosting a joint booth together with other projects co-funded by the I3 instrument, including CLOSER, BATMASS, IN-MOB, and EVEN CLOSER.

Our presence at the summit allowed us to connect with visionary speakers, investors, and industry leaders, showcasing how interregional cooperation is helping reduce strategic dependencies and build a European recycled permanent magnet value chain. The joint stand perfectly illustrated the added value of connecting regional ecosystems and bringing innovation closer to the market.

A final stop at SUM 2026 in Procida

We ended this action-packed week on a high note by taking our message to the scientific community at the 9th Multidisciplinary Symposium on Circular Economy and Urban Mining (SUM 2026) in Procida, Italy. Sharing our findings and receiving insightful feedback from top international experts in such a breathtaking location was the perfect wrap-up to an unforgettable week.
